Living Coastlines

Monitoring erosion, dune systems, salt marshes and coastal habitats to understand where natural buffers can reduce climate risk more effectively than hard infrastructure alone.

Return of the Wetland

Restoring fragmented wetlands and tracking vegetation, bird populations, water quality and salinity to measure whether ecological function returns after intervention.

The landscape changes before the spreadsheet does.

First transect after summer heat period. Surface vegetation remains sparse, but dune root systems appear more stable than the previous season.

Salinity measurements rose significantly near the eastern inlet. Additional sampling requested before classifying this as a persistent shift.

Juvenile bird counts increased around the restored marsh edge. The team will repeat observation at sunrise across three consecutive days.

Local farmers joined a groundwater workshop. Field data now being compared with seasonal irrigation records to understand where demand reductions could have the largest effect.

Environmental signals should be understandable before they become emergencies.

MEDERS combines field ecology, public data, restoration trials and local partnerships. Research is valuable only when it can inform what happens on the ground next.
